Moving into a new home is stressful and we often forget to think about security. Use this handy, quick to read check list to make sure you minimise your risk.
Anything that locks- change it! Brand new locks are essential.
Doors, Gates Windows & Burglar Guards
Anything that opens- check it! Windows, doors sliding doors, gates, driveway gates- the works.
Check frames, tracks runners, burglar guard strength, rust, are the screws visible or welded?- in short everything!
Beef up security
Consider extra security for gates & doors, anti-lift safety chains, eye-holes on doors. Interior gates securing the bedrooms etc.
Alarm transition process
Taking over from the old tenants, you should meet the security company, get manuals and instruction in how the alarm system works and discuss the tough questions like average response time in emergencies. Also, get quotes and meet competing security companies that have a presence in your area.
Test and double check!
Test the alarm & make sure the alarm will let the neighbours and passersby know that the alarm has been triggered.
Meet your Neighbours
Security is at its best when communities look out for each other. Join community Facebook groups and WhatsApp groups if possible and get to know your immediate and near neighbours.
There’s an app for that…
Consider CCTV and basic security home automation- connecting your cameras to a smartphone app has never been cheaper.
Check the perimeter
Walk your fence, wall or gate, try to get into neighbouring properties (with their permission of course) to see what risks you face from their side. Imagine you have lost your keys and you can’t get in- how would you try to get in?
Visibility and lighting
What changes could you make to increase visibility at night? Cut back hedges and undergrowth? Add more lighting? Think about making it harder for thieves to remain camouflaged.
Expert security assessment
Get a second opinion – a security expert can give you a thorough assessment of your new home’s weak points and possible solution.
You can find lock smiths, home automation, alarm, and security services in the HomeFixer app.
